Make Your Fresh-Cut Christmas Tree Last
It’s never too early to start planning your holiday decorations, all of which revolve around a beautiful Christmas tree!
Having a real tree instead of a plastic one may sound intimidating, but these tips will help guide you through the most wonderful time of the year.
Purchase Early
Make sure you buy a freshly cut tree. This may mean buying your tree early, as many are cut weeks or months in advance. Look for lots where the trees are kept in the shade, preferably in a humid area where the trees can maintain moisture. Your ideal Christmas tree will have a healthy green color, with very few brown needles.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Hydration is the most important step in keeping an attractive, healthy Christmas tree. Evergreen trees automatically seal cuts with sap, so you will have to slice some trunk off the bottom before placing it in water. Keep your tree in a stand that holds at least a gallon of water. You will need to keep a close eye on the water level and refill as needed.
Problem Areas
Split trunks are common characteristics of Christmas trees – but have no fear! Cracks are natural and occur when a fresh tree loses moisture too quickly. Many cracks will close as the tree takes up water, but to ensure your tree stays hydrated through the winter season, drill four wooden screws on each side of the split, aligning from top to bottom. This will stop the tree from further splitting and encourage absorbance of water.
