Autumn is upon us! The air is chilled and the leaves are starting to change colors and fall. It’s time to put the garden to bed, and this includes putting your beloved hydrangeas with their beautiful, abundant blooms to rest for the fall and winter months. It’s true: the time to tuck-in hydrangeas is upon us!
The third week of September is National Indoor Plant Week (NIPW). It’s a perfect time to bring houseplants in from the outdoor decks and patios, putting an end to your plant’s “summer vacation”. In the fall, outdoor gardens are winding down and all of us end up spending a little more time indoors. Sending a college kid off to school? A houseplant is a perfect going away gift!

Although perennials are any plants that bloom for more than two seasons, including trees and shrubs, when most people hear the term, they think of smaller flowers that bloom for many seasons. Perennials are great because they do not have to be purchased and planted every year. But, it is important for gardeners in the Midwest to plant perennials that can handle the crazy weather thrown at our area. Each perennial is different, so choosing the right ones for your yard is essential to your yard’s success!
Despite being the smallest birds on earth, hummingbirds expend so much energy flapping their wings that they must eat at least half their body weight each day to replace the calories they burn. Most birds visit nearly one thousand flowers every day to meet their nectar needs. Although feeders will bring some birds to your yard, you will attract even more birds when your feeder is accompanied by nectar-rich flowers. If you plant the right ones, your flowers are sure to entice those hungry little birds to your garden all summer long.
